I want to write about my mother. My mother was diagnosed with Scleroderma in the early 80's. So early, that I was so young I can not remember exactly when. I can only describe her as the bravest, most admired mother and most loved grandmother. When she was diagnosed I do know that mother was in the middle of a horrible marriage, and had the strength to end this marriage and raise two children as a single mother, and what a wonderful job she did. She battled this illness, and I do mean battled. She was one of the very few cases around when she became ill. I remember her going into the hospital for one of the several experimental surgeries, and my teachers would ask me why I had a picture of my mother on my desk. I would tell them that my mom was in the hospital because she had "skelaterma". My mother had gone through several surgeries and had one finger amputated do to the illness. I think what makes me admire her most is that she managed to fight this disease, which at the time not many people, if anyone, had heard about. When she became too ill to work, she took this as an opportunity to go back to school and earn a college degree. Again, all the while being a single mother. I am not sure how she did it, and I know I lack the strength she has. I have seen friends that she has made through this disease pass, and I calmly say to her how lucky she is to have had this, and to be doing as well as she is. All the while I walk away horrified that this could be her one day. I have to say I am lucky, not her, me. I have seen the strongest person battle everything and come out shining. My tribute is to my mother, Leila, who I am lucky to still have here with me. Also to all those who have lost loved ones to this illness, you are also the brave ones. You to, might not have been diagnosed with this disease, but you "have" it and you have survived. Mom, I Love You. Thank You for being so Strong!!! |
