"I am the baby of four girls and was very close to Mom."

My mom died of scleroderma on October 22, 1993. She suffered with this awful disease for almost 18 years. The last ten years of her life were terribly painful. She had five of her fingers amputated, two toes, and in the end they were going to take her leg. She had these very painful ulcers on her joints. She always had said you can take my fingers and toes, but when you start taking my limbs, that's it.

She was in the hospital being prepared for surgery and the doctors said her vitals were strong. We all got to see her before they shood us out. Suddenly we heard a code blue coming from the room where she was. Her doctor came out looking so terrified and asked us if we wanted him to bring her back. We said yes (she had a DNR in her file.) My father and us four girls were so afraid. They were able to get her heart started but she was on life-support. We were very sorry to her for putting her in this position. We all talked to her and told her how much we loved her. My dad asked us all if we were okay with making the decision to turn off the machine. That was the most hardest decision I have ever had to make. We all agreed and set Mom free.

She is sorely missed. I am the baby of four girls and was very close to mom. Her doctors miss her very much they said she was a delightful person always had a smile on her face and never complained. That is so true she always had a big smile on her face no matter how bad the pain was. Sadly, my dad passed away one day shy of six months from Mom. He died on April 21,1994. He died from cancer of the bladder which spread to his liver. We knew he had given up because he missed Mom and wanted to be with her.

I pray for a cure or at least the cause of this disease to be found soon.  This is sent to you in memory of Virginia Santos, our beloved mother.
